Description
1084 High Carbon Steel Sheets in 400mm (15.75 inches) wide and 900 or 1200mm long is a high carbon steel suitable for use by new and experienced knife makers. It is one of the easiest and most forgiving knife steels to heat treat, and is simple to work on whether performing stock removal or forging.
1084 steel can be paired with 15N20Â to make damascus. The 1084 layers become darker while the high nickel of 15N20 remains lighter when etched in Ferric Chloride Powder.
Comes annealed (soft) and ready to work with hand tools.
Features and Benefits
- Simple and forgiving heat treat process, allowing effective heat treatment with minimal equipment
- Easy to achieve great results with only basic hand and power tools. This makes it an ideal option for beginners
- Perfectly pairs with 15N20 to make eye-catching damascus patterns thanks to their near-identical heat treat process
- Low alloy content allows easily repeatable consistent results, making 1084 popular, even with advanced knife makers
- German made to exacting standards
Alloy Composition
Carbon (C) 0.80 – 0.93% | Manganese (Mn) 0.60 – 0.90% | Phosphorus (P) 0.03% | Sulfur (S) 0.05%

- Annealing: Heat to 815°C, cool to 650°C in a Heat Treat Furnace at a rate not exceeding 28°C per hour. Alternatively, bury in an insulating material such as vermiculite or wood ash and allow to cool slowly
Recommended Heat Treatment
- Coat in Anti Scale Compound (optional)
- Heat to 815°C and hold until the temperature is even
- Quench in oil pre-heated to 50-60°C – Houghton’s G Medium Quench Oil (ideal), but canola oil is an acceptable substitute

Ashley –
Excellent quality steel. I use this steel in all of my Damascus billets. I purchase these bigger sheets and trim them down into strips to mix with 15n20. Very good quality for a very reasonable price.

Of all the fancy steel you can choose, always have 1084 on hand. It might be plain and boring but it won’t stop loving you if you get it wrong in heat treatment.
